Breck Nordic

Breckenridge Nordic Center is officially open for the season and grooming the trails high up on Peak 7!

The groomed sprint track for fast, fast Jack & Rudy.

Jack & Rudy love getting out on the fast & easy groomed terrain and really flooring it. We call these trails the "groomie zoomies" because of how fast they zoom around the trails. The phrase groomie zoomie actually originated with Max & Zorro years ago. Then Zorro taught young Jack & Rudy about zooming on the groomies and now Jack & Rudy are experts at the groomie zoomie.

Flying along the groomie zoomie trail!

Come along for today's groomie zoomie video fun. You'll note there is actually a light layer of fresh snow on this stretch of groomed trail. Laying fresh tracks in small layer of fresh snow over a groomed trail - it doesn't get much better than this! Top speed in this clip? Well, 23 MPH - groomie zoomie!

We were going SO fast today, that we were running out of trails far before our planned time to meet Nancy back at the trailhead. So, I had us turnaround and repeat 3 different stretches of trail. Jack was perfectly agreeable to repeat since the alternative was to be done! Rudy had no problem with the first 2 repeats but then had an opinion about my 3 request to turnaround and repeat a section of trail. Silly kid!

"I'm fine turning around to keep going!" states happy Jack.
"WOO! Just plain WOOOO! We already did this trail!' adds wooing Rudy.

Of course, the groomie zoomies are always a good chance to catch fast running Jack & Rudy hovering over the trail:

The Hover Husky Brothers. Wheeee!

Naturally, going as fast and far as we did this morning meant the goofy kids had to roll snow angels to cool their jets at one of our turnaround points.

Stop, drop and ROLL!

Love the groomie zoomies, right guys?

"You bet! What a fun morning!" says the happy pair.

Zooming this morning: 10.4 miles traveled with 1050 feet of elevation climbed and a top speed of 23 MPH.

2022/2023 Season to Date: 18 days on the trails covering 137.1 miles with 11,400 feet of elevation climbed.

Over

Cool shot of fast flying Jack & Rudy on the trails yesterday morning. Zoom!

Low angle shot due to me being in a ski tuck; but still a cool
shot of the flying sled dogs :)

We returned to the Harrison Creek Trail yesterday morning and, initially, I thought we were going to have a repeat of Monday's multiple Team Organization Meetings to discuss the proper actions of skijoring. But, it turns out that Jack just wanted to tag Rudy once and, after a quick "hey!" from me, the antics ended and we were skijoring again. Silly kids...

"Tag! You're it!" goes Jack.
"Got it! I'm IT!!!!" accepts Rudy :)

We got a nice, shallow layer of fresh snow overnight which allowed us to lay fresh tracks our entire "out direction" on the trail and then be second to our own tracks on the way back.

Fresh tracks fun!

For today's video highlight, come along for a wild skijor ride behind fast running Jack & Rudy. Wild? Well, you can tell that by the bouncing camera and low angle as I'm in a ski tuck to keep pace. Near the end of the clip, we are approaching a large dip in the trail that I don't want to attempt on skis. A simple "over to the left" from me and the team expertly slides left so we all avoid the dip. Great partners!

Usually when I call out "Wait, time to turnaround." I get the immediate stop, drop & roll from Jack or both Jack & Rudy. Well, yesterday, both turned around on command without a drop & roll. But, as I said, "Ok, let's go." thinking we'd have no snow angels; both remembered, "Hey, we drop & roll before any restart!" I should have expected it :)

Turn, stop, drop & roll today!
Yes, that huge indentation in the snow to Jack's right is the start of his
snow angel that then rolled and wiggled to his current location.

My perfect listening pals that are always good for a few comedy acts during every skijor outing :)

"We heard you laugh!!!!" says the comedians.

Only time for a short outing yesterday morning, but a ton of fun: 6.5 miles traveled with 500 feet of elevation climbed and a top speed of 21 MPH.

2022/2023 Season to Date: 17 days on the trails covering 126.7 miles with 10,350 feet of elevation climbed.

TOM

This morning's skijor had a mix of fast & fun skijoring along with a set of Team Organization Meetings...

"Wanna play!" bows silly Rudy.
"No back down here!" replies Jack.

A Team Organization Meeting (or TOM), you ask? Well, a few times a season, I have to stop the team and discuss the objective of skijoring and remind everyone what is not allowed. Not allowed? Provoking, pouncing, dorking and wrestling on the trail. As you see above, we had an outbreak leading to a TOM discussion.

Ok, the discussion went well. Here's a great cornering shot!

Flying around a corner. But, wait, my knee rarely shows on  the camera.
I must be in a serious skiing tuck!

Sometimes skijoring requires some real skiing from me! Come along for a fun wild ride as Jack & Rudy are propelling me along this winding stretch of trail. Anytime you see this much of my skis (or my knees) and/or see Jack & Rudy disappear briefly from the camera, that means I am in a serious tuck trying my hardest to keep upright and in pace with the fun kids! Phew, I made it through this wild stretch upright!

Given that nice video, it seems the TOM went well, right? Well, a little further along and POW from Jack.

Time for another Team Organization Meeting.
But, nice left hook Jack :)

The second meeting went well. Here we are restarted again. Three nice things in this photo: 1) Jack & Rudy are behaving :) 2) the skies have clouded over; 3) it started snowing lightly (notice the snowflake hitting the camera up and left of Rudy).

Yay for a successful TOM!
Yay for snow!

Back to the trailhead and Jack & Rudy were very proud of their antics this morning :)

"I think those meeting went very well!" says innocent Rudy.
"Yea, good discussions!" adds innocent Jack.

A lot of fast & wild skijoring in between two Team Organization Meetings: 9.1 miles traveled with 700 feet of elevation climbed and a top speed of 20 MPH.

2022/2023 Season to Date: 16 days on the trails covering 120.2 miles with 9850 feet of elevation climbed.
