Endless Crust

All smiles upon finding a perfect Spring crust at Rabbit Ears Pass this morning!

"We are having a BLAST!" exclaims the happy, happy kids!

Our skijor this morning took us to the trails near Dumont Lake at Rabbit Ears Pass. I was not sure if the crust was going to be firm enough to hold our weight or if we were going to have to stay on set trails waiting for the crust to get firm enough.

Well, we found out the answer within minutes of our start. Come along for the video discovery of the crust. We start this clip on the right shoulder of a wide & groomed snowmobile trail. The shoulder is very  nice (for me) as it does not have snowmobile ruts. We are having a great time flying along this shoulder until the smooth shoulder starts to shrink to the snowmobile tracks. Eventually, I decide it's time to test the crust. So, I call out a "right" to my partners. Then watch as we veer right, discover the crust is indeed firm and, ZOOM, off we go skijoring the endless Spring crust! Wheeee!

[watch on youtube if no video loads below]

With the firmness of the crust established, we had a blast abandoning set trails and gliding all over the place, making our own way, atop the wonderful & endless Spring crust. What fun!!!

Catching air as the kids are zooming along making our own
path all over Rabbit Ears Pass.

If you liked the last shot, how about this one. Awesome!

Flying Jack & Rudy as you see nothing but "endless Spring crust" as
far as the eye can see!

I paused once when we approached a confluence of snowmobile tracks to pick a path for me to cross on my skis. Well, I paused.... :)

"You paused, We 'stop, drop & roll!" demonstrates the sillies.
Far off to the right is Rabbit Ears Peak and the rocks atop the peak
which are the ears of Rabbit Ears Pass.

What fun, fun, fun - retired mentor Zorro is going to love hearing about today's outing!

"Cool. I think we ALL earned 'end of run' treats!" says wonderful Zorro.
"Yep, treats all around!" adds the happy kids waiting their turn.

What a successful day with our first "endless crust skijor" of 2022: 11.2 miles traveled with 900 feet of elevation climbed and a top speed of 23 MPH.

2021/2022 Season to Date: 128 days on the trails covering 1087.9 miles with 101,300 feet of elevation climbed.
