Snow Day

Who had fun running through the fresh snow on Baldy Mountain this morning?

"I did! I did!" states happy Jack.
"I did more! I did! I did!" exclaims happy Rudy.

We awoke to 4+ inches of fresh snow with the snow still falling. So, we set out to do our favorite "fresh snow skijor" - doing laps on steep Baldy Mountain. We started out by doing one lap around the historic Iowa Mill. Then, we did a larger lap climbing high above Iowa Mill before coming back down.

The higher we went on Baldy, the deeper the snow got! Here we are starting down from our highest point as Jack & Rudy are breaking trail in upwards of 15 (maybe 18) inches of fresh powder! In case you are wondering, we really are on a trail (a 4wd dirt road in the summer). Jack & Rudy have perfect trail finding skills no matter how deep the snow!

POW, POW, Powder!

Then, as we got closer to Iowa Mill, it was laying fresh tracks in 4-5 inches of fresh snow on an untouched side trail.

Fresh tracks fun!!!

Finally it was back to the main Baldy Trail with set tracks from a few other skiers (including ourselves on the first lap we made around Iowa Mill). With set tracks, it is pedal to the metal from fast running Jack & Rudy. Zoom!

Fresh snow to give me some control of the skis and a couple of set
ski tracks for Jack & Rudy to fly in :)

Come along for a glimpse into the fun as we'll highlight both the fresh tracks and set tracks parts of our outing. We start out laying fresh tracks in 4-5 inches of new snow on a side trail. This side trail connects to the main Baldy Trail at the historic Iowa Mill. Jack & Rudy know to turn right at Iowa Mill, hop in the set tracks and put the petal to the medal on this stretch of trail. Whee!

[watch on youtube if no video loads below]

Of course all that plowing through deep snow and speeding in set tracks means you really need to cool your jets at any pause on the trail. I paused momentarily to check our time out on the trails and...

"Stop, drop and ROLL!" goes the silly snow angel rolling kids :)

Fun day in fresh snow all over steep Baldy Mountain: 6.7 miles traveled with 1200 feet of elevation climbed and a top speed of 22 MPH.

2022/2023 Season to Date: 80 days on the trails covering 696.8 miles with 63,850 feet of elevation climbed.
