A wonderful pow, pow, powder day this morning! What a late March treat!
Jack & Rudy plowing through over 8 inches of fresh powder! |
The forecast for overnight snow was all over the map with pessimistic estimates of 1 inch and optimistic estimates of 5 inches. Well, what did we get? Over 8 inches of fresh powder!!! Love when the forecast is wrong in our favor!
We started the morning with a powder run in Dry Gulch. Come along for a fun minute of Jack & Rudy plowing and towing me through 8+ inches of powder. Notice about 30 seconds into the clip and Jack & Rudy slow in unison (but do not stop) to catch their breath for about 10 seconds before flooring the powder plow again. Nice coordinated teamwork for a trail breaking treat in late March.

My plan was to reward Jack & Rudy for their trail breaking work by eventually dropping onto the trails of Gold Run Nordic Center. I was hoping the groomer got to the trails before us so Jack & Rudy could have a fast "groomie zoomie" treat after their trail breaking work. Success!!!
First tracks on the freshly groomed track. Wheeee! |
Jack & Rudy are always good for at least one comedic interlude on every skijor outing. Today's entertainment started with Jack doing one of his "rodent lunges" off trail into the deep snow. Once Rudy saw Jack's lunge, he joined right in with one of his beautiful rodent swan dives:
"Whatcha ya got bro? Incoming!!!!" demonstrates Rudy. |
What did the comedians come up with off trail? Well, not a rodent but a large stick. Seriously - a rodent lunge and subsequent dive for a silly stick?!?! Oh those three year olds!
Jack showcasing his "big stick" prize. Rudy broke off a piece of the stick for his prize :) |
Rodent, er um stick, dive over and time to get back on trail. Top speed on the groomie zoomie section of trail this morning? 25 MPH!
The fast kids catching air as the sun starts to break through the clouds for nice shadow effects. |
Back to the trailhead to report the day's antics to elder Zorro:
"No, really, a 'stick dive' - those kids?!?" Zorro consoles me :) "But you should have seen the size of the stick!" contends Jack. "Don't knock it until you try it!" smirks Rudy. |
A trail breaking powder day followed by a groomie zoomie sprint: 7.5 miles traveled with 500 feet of elevation climbed and a top speed of 25 MPH.
2020/2021 Season to Date: 124 days on the trails covering 1011.7 miles with 84,800 feet of elevation climbed.
